Here is the working end of the tool, the hole goes on the flywheel shaft, the handle turns the tool, and the cutter cleans the recess of old staking ears. The screws allow adjustment. The small through hole is for alignment of the staking punch.

Thanks guys! I was unaware of this tool and had previously wondered about how the recess was cut. Upon seeing the tool identified here I dug into the binder that my grandfather put together for our ST and found the tool page I posted above. I figured out the flywheel pinion hole and handle myself but wanted to see the cutting tool. In talking with my father it wasn't long after the ST was purchased through the H-D front office that he and my grandpa did the engine modification work, I would hazard a guess that grandpa brought the tool home from experimental to cut the stuffer recess.

All the standard cranks came with the steel "compression plates" in them from the factory. They had to be removed to install a new crankpin, hence the need for the tool. Most performance mods involved an aftermarket stuffer plate to reduce crankcase volume. It was a plate inserted between the flywheels and captive by the case halves.

Rubone, when you say 30's up style for the crank jig, does that mean that the JD cranks do not fit in that style. I am looking to but a truing jig for JD's, and want to make sure I get the correct one.
