I had a little Cannonball practice today. Patience slung her chain off. It hit the chain guard and broke the rear mount. I'll have to weld that tonight.

Fortunately I had a spare master link along. You guys all carry one, right? This time I will safety wire the clip.

A short walk back up the road and I got to watch a Miata run over my chain just before I got to it. No harm done and the guy gave me a lift back to my machine. His comment was "that looks like one of those Cannonball bikes!"












Here's the weird thing. Two years ago, just a couple of weeks before the 2016 Motorcycle Cannonball, I lost my throttle linkage pivot in the exact same place. I planted Patience firmly in the weeds trying to turn around with no throttle.

The conclusion from these two incidents is clear. When practicing for the 2020 Cannonball, don't take that road.

On one of my early Excelsior twin single speed motorcycles, I had a problem with it spitting out master link lock clips. Even just the fact of trying to pedal start the bike would result in the broken lock clip on the ground. It turns out that in back of the pedal clutch, the chains were passing close by, too close. With today available chains, not even counting the extra wide o-ring type, are wider than the original chains. While the chains did not hit each other, the extra thickness of the lock clips cause a problem. I was not using any original chain on this Excelsior.
To solve the problem, I pointed the primary chain master link out, like normal, but the drive chain master link was pointed in towards the wheel. With this master link setup, no more master link lock clip issues.
It sounds like this may not be your problem, but just an issue to be aware of.
Like you, I have had been stopped along one section of this one road many times during the many years of riding on the pre-16 motorcycles tour out of the one area. Most times I was able to get back on the road, a few times, not so lucky. Because of that, I would always take it easy in that area.

Ha! Someday an archeologist with find a small pile of early 20th century Motorcycle part on that spot and conclude that there was a motordrome there. It's some kind of eastern Nebraska Bermuda Triangle.

I think I have something like that happening Burgie, but in my case it appears to be the primary cover that's at fault. The chain runs close to it in two places. I'm going to take it off and do some trimming this morning before I load the bike.

Burgie, I went and looked again, and you were exactly right. The primary chain and the final drive chain pass so close together that occasionally, if one chain drifts left and the other drifts right, the pins on the master link can hit the pins on the primary chain. I did what you said, I put the clip on the final drive chain towards the wheel. I think it will solve the problem. Thanks for the help!

Brenda and Patience and I finally finished loading on Sunday evening and hit the road for Portland about 8:00 pm on Sunday. We drove all night Sunday night and, except for a few hours at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, we drove all day Monday until about 5:00 pm when we started to feel unfit for duty so we checked in to a hotel in Cleveland, OH and slept for twelve hours. We have another full day of driving ahead of us today. Portland bound.












We enjoyed the Henry Ford Museum a lot.
