  • Ray Tursky HD was in Madison Wis. Tursky raced flat track, enduro, TT etc. Known for winning the 1934 Jack Pine. Post war, Mike Wilson was wrenching for Ray. HD took notice of Mike. They wanted to open a dealership in Cedar Rapids Iowa & offered Mike a full set of HD tools & the first year inventory in advance. All Mike had to do was setup a building to get started. Mike took the offer & Ray wouldn't talk to Mike for many years, long after they were both out of buisiness. Mike & Margaret opened their dealership in 1950. I remember the owner let Mike ride the old Tursky servicar at Davenport. Ray at Marion Indiana 1946 TT.

          • Roger, do you know the source of the "Ray Tursky custom knuck" photo? I'm not convinced that's Ray.

            Wisconsin State Fair poster stamps -

            Opening day 1915 Wisconsin State Fair was the day Red Parkhurst raced Michigan aviator O. E. Williams in a motorcycle vs. aviator match race, Red won.

            • Tursky Knuck pic was online, not my collection. It sure looks likes Ray to me. There was a lot of those motorcycle Vs aeroplane races in the 1914-1915 era. Cool pic

                • Locally several guys had ties with S&S Cycle. My early mentor Carl Glider met George Smith in the US Army in WW11. George,Marge & Stanley Stankos rode out to Welman Iowa to visit Carl about 1958. Stanlet was on his pink dual carb custom Panhead. The bike still exists. Leo Payne & Mike Wilson were involved in designing S&S racing carbs. A close friend Jeff Wiley was with Leo in Cali racing & Bonneville runs.
                  I have been an S&S dealer for over 25 years & influenced the current Super E carb design as well as their FI manifold design.
                  I got a call a few years ago from George Smith Jr & we had a nice long talk about tuning & S&S history.
                  I donated a copy of a 1958 Cycle Magazine to S&S, with an early article on S&S including pics of Stanley's Pink Panhead.
                  1st pic is from Harry Hopp, taken at NEITA Raceway in Cedar Falls Iowa about 1970.
                  Harry hand painted the fairing with Harley Hospital ,Leo & Lyle's shop.
                  Jeff Wiley & Leo at Bonneville, 1st non streamliner / open bike, to break 200 MPH in a pass at Bonneville.
                  Wiley is on Turnip Eater & Leo standing. They were working thru a high speed wobble problem at 165MPH.

                  • Thanks for posting this Duffey. I spent a lot of time at NEITA raceway in the late 70's.
                    I raced my 1970 RAIV GTO Judge there, and helped many buddies in the pits with their cars.
                    Great memories, and great people.

                    • About 1978 my friend had me go with him to look at a mint low mleage 1969 Boss 429 Hemi Mustang Black on Black, bought it for $1,800. On the lot was 2 other black on black 1969 muscle cars, one was GTO judge 389 tripower mint cond. All 3 cars had $2,600 asking prices.

                        I found info to indicate that the first photo in your post #5125 is of Pittsburgh Dept of Public Safety radio equipped units. In late 1931 the department purchased 14 radio equipped motorcycle units as shown in the photo. The H-D factory order specifies radio unit and battery in sidecar and "police" badge on front fender as shown.

                        The artist rendering of the Henderson factory would be the Cass Ave and Palmer Ave factory, with the original address of 1158 Cass Ave. I believe the factory building Henderson occupied in late 1917 on Bellevue Ave between Mack and Benson still stands, the original address was 764 Bellevue Ave which is now 3190 Bellevue.

                        • Thanks Badger. If I remember correctly, the original Henderson Plant was on Cass Avenue, or was it corporate general office? The 268 Jefferson factory was around the Cobo Arena & the Ren Cen Area. I had a journal and lots of information and old pictures, but unfortunately they were destroyed in a basement flood. I can recall my Grandfather telling me they used to go down to the Detroit River for lunch, and sometimes fish off the piers.
