This picture of Dad asleep at road's edge is pretty much priceless; i can only imagine other riders doing the same. (When i was in nursing school in 1975, i rode from Denver up to Aspen to watch the road races and then rode back, i'd tried to do that ride all in one day, but i was so whipped, i had to stop by the edge of the road around 11 pm and slept a couple hours alongside the bike in a shallow ditch. i can still see the brilliant shimmering of the Milky Way...) Dad's travelling companion, Richard Setter must have taken this picture, waking up before Dad. Again, note the rock formation, the 5 layers of rocks above the bike in the closeup pic and the far away pic, so a lot of these pics were taken in this one location. The far away pic, i can tell its Dad by the way he is standing and also the one-piece, one color suit he's wearing in both pics and the final picture i'll post tomorrow. The newspaper clipping is from the local weekly Hartington paper, the Cedar County News; i found this article in the Hartington Library, dated Thursday, August 18 which stated Dad and Richard arrived home Friday past, which would have been August 12. The article states a number of interesting bits of information, one, that the trip took 36 hours and two, that they stopped and visited people they knew and stayed one week in Lincoln with people (i recognize the last name) that Dad knew, so they did not make the trip in 36 hours, it took them at the very least one week. I did the math on gasoline consumption assuming gasoline was around 24 cents/gallon... The trip required 25.5 gallons of gasoline; The loaded sidecar rig averaged around 38.4 mpg. Their average speed for 980 miles in 36 hours, 27.2 mph...
