  • Vintage Pic of the Day - August 9, 2021

Nothing but air - US Army Africa. This appears to be from the same lot of photos where Bob posted as #1456. This was a total coincidental post.

    • Note one is an 841 and one is an XA, both with fat tires, Folks!

Wish I could find a better copy of this one,...

This is Theodore J. Werle (1915), author of Camping Hints when Touring with a Motorcycle, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. But there is a great back story
here. Mr. Werle from Wisconsin after hearing lectures and survivor stories of the terrible spread of (TB) Tuberculosis in 1911 wanted to get involved and help stop the dreaded disease. So he joined Wisconsin Anti-Tuberculosis Association (WATA) in their fight against the disease. This involved traveling across the far reaches of 6 counties in the state by foot, horse back and wooden wagon to deliver lantern illuminate slides shows to educate residents and promote prevention strategies. All this he did taking up the open country as his lodging and camping everywhere he went. Then the local Harley Davidson industry, facilitated (as legend notes) Otto Bradley) helped him become more efficient in his travels and Arthur Davidson invited Werle to Milwaukee and presented him with a new motorcycle to use for transportation. This story from the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee was reported in HOG Magazine Issue 011 - 2011 p. 64. The article notes "By early 1915, Werle proudly reported from the stage at the Majestic Theatre in Milwaukee that Wisconsin had the lowest death rate from TB in the U.S. – while making sure his motorcycle was on stage to share the credit."

Notice on the front right side of Mr Werle's tank is the long time symbol adopted for the public health battle of TB.

                            • Again... Thanks to all for keeping this thread going.
A bother sometimes I'm sure, but your P.I.T.A. really makes my day! (I guess that doesn't sound right but you get the idea.)
