BTW... the Shovel's pretty sweet looking, too. I have an 81 FXS done much the same way (chrome heads, etc). What's yours?

Hi, Guys

Back after a bit of a hiatus, and now working on final details on the 65 FLH.

Very much appreciated the photos above that helped me place the turn signal pilot lamps correctly.

Now I need a color reference for the outer and inner primary. Mine are in great shape physically, but the inner was painted silver at some point in the past, and the outer is weathered and stained in such a way that I can't tell which shade was the original.

I know they're sand cast finish and grey, but in B/W photos they appear to have been much darker than the motor cases, whereas in the color photos in the Fields "Panhead" book they appear to have been much lighter, and roughly the same shade as the cases and the cam cover.

Can anyone help me out?

I already tried comparing to the MOCO's "Silver Bead Blast" paint, but that shade seems way too light. I'm reluctant to bead blast them, as that may turn them too light a color, and polish off the original gritty texture, which is still intact.

They are a natural finish....no paint, no nothing.

I know they're natural, but I need a color reference to know what I'm shooting for.

Been thinking of buying a blasting cabinet, renting a compressor, and blasting them with walnut shells, but I still need to know what shade to go for... i.e, do I try to darken them, lighten them, or what? The outer that I have seems never to have been painted or blasted, yet it has both light and dark areas on it, due to age and weathering, and I don't know which is the original color.

Have them blasted with a soft media, like walnut shell, and walk away.

Harbor Freight carries both 12 Grit Coarse and 24 Grit Fine Walnut shell media.

Anybody with experience got a suggestion which is better for cleaning up my weathered outer primary cover and stripping the paint from the inner primary?

headlamp nacelle

Hi, Guys

Back after a 6 month hiatus while waiting for parts to come back from the chromer.

I'm assembling the turn signal pilot lamps in my headlamp nacelle, and have a dilemma.

The lamp assemblies have both a cork washer and a lock washer. Do both go inside the nacelle, or does the cork washer go on the outside (facing the rider)?
