Check the end of the starter motor. Is this specific to 1965 or is it used on 1966 as well?
Check the plate on top of the spring cover on the shocker. I have collected 5 sets of the earlier shockers. Mine must be 1958-1964.... poop!! Now I have to find a set of these.

A note on solenoid covers, Folks,
Since I gave my best to a buddy so he could get "winner's circle", I scrubbed three of Tedd's dark gray covers, and put them in my front window to see if they would sun-bleach.
Just one summer and they look like this:
SOLCVRS.jpg
And to 'second' Steve's photo of the starter motor with the extended top stud, I always found it suspiciously convenient for hanging a starter relay.

Steve thanks for the pics.I guess there possibly goes the 1965 Gold piping only theory.I am wondering as to weather the underside of that seat has the round front and the leather is riveted onto the pan.Do those shocks have the small round holes on the bottom for adjusting? Paddy

Hi Cotton.
How much for one of the “Cotten patina” rubber solenoid covers.
I looked at the battery tray of this bike and it does not have the holes for the starter relay bracket.
I got distracted during the search for where the relay is located and forgot about it when I spotted some other anomolly.
Paddy, I didn’t think to take a full shot of the under side of the seat, and cant remember how it was done, but will take a shot when I get back over there in the next couple of weeks. (his place is 2 hrs away)
The shockers looked the same on the bottom but the round top spring cover oem 54702-56 may be a 1965 and 1966 only part.
I am thinking that HD may have used a Sportster style covers on these 65-66 shockers.
The following is supposition on my part,....The Sportster style spring cover (Round edged top cover) may have been used when the bullet cover was discarded when the rear crash bar was fitted.Steve Little

1965 distributor
Here is another 1 year part that I don't have yet.
Knuckle/Pan style dual bolt flange to bolt the distributor to the case, but it has auto advance head.
PM me if you have one of these distributors for sale.

I took this picture because of the extra hole in the mousetrap. I had the same style bracket with 45 degree grease nipple but it only had one hole in the bell crank. I had a fish around in my mousetrap box and found one of these little darlings.
Just looking at it now... it looks pretty cozy for the fuel line in between the head and the mousetrap.
A cautionary note for people with low Vin using this bike as a guide for restoration...1965 seems like it was a mad year of changes for HD.
This bike is in the high 7000 Vin.
If you have a early 65 you should do some digging around to make sure this bike can be used as a guide.
An early 65 Pan of the same criteria (Known History) would be the ticket.

They looked similar to the aftermarket inlet clamps that are termed aircraft style.
I rang the owner to see what was on his bike, The pictures I took of the bike this week show what he described.
The owner says nothing has ever been changed on this bike (with the exception of the removal of the windscreen and buddy seat)
After reading back through this thread, a couple of replies can be confirmed.
This bike has the 5/16 breather fittings in the oil tank and the case.
The bike has the pinched style oil line fittings on all oil lines and was has a chrome valanced battery side cover.Steve Little

There was no battery sidecover on a 1965. Just a big black battery. Although the cover carries a -65 part number it didn't appear untill the 1966 models hit the street.lBe sure to visit;

Thanks Chris. The original owner must have had the same thought as me. Without the side cover it looks unfinished, so I'll be running my shiny cover.
Cant say that I have noticed this style of mirror on eBay but I will be looking for it now
