48 Panhead Timer Question

Hi, I am intending to replace the incorrect timer with this one

From reading Palmers manual, it is unclear whether this was operated manually at the timer, or through a cable to the left handlebar grip. Can anyone advise?

All are controlled from the twist grip up until the Auto advance on the '64 Servi-Car and '65 Panhead. However, the timer you picture is not correct for '48. The '48 timer is the newer configuration with the sliding post protruding out the side. For '47-'48 they still used the early points, in '49 the points changed but outward appearance stayed the same.

Thanks Guys, terrific response to the first of many questions - it also appears that the advance cable is held in place by a clip attached to the relay support? I'll deal with the parkerised v's chrome at a later date.

I didn't know that the '48 still used early points. Is there any difference between early, and later points in regards to function, or performance?

Lots of early timer heads are around with damaged points posts, posts broken off, insulating washers missing, etc. I usually do a simple mod and use '70 up Shovelhead points in them.

Jerry,'47 was the first year of timer without the strap,changed to later points in '49

I believe it has to do with the wire stud. Meaning the circuit breaker wire stud, not the adjusting screw.

Note the advance slot is in a very awkward place.
