Even just the fact of trying to pedal start the bike would result in the broken lock clip on the ground. It turns out that in back of the pedal clutch, the chains were passing close by, too close. With today available chains, not even counting the extra wide o-ring type, are wider than the original chains. While the chains did not hit each other, the extra thickness of the lock clips cause a problem. I was not using any original chain on this Excelsior.
To solve the problem, I pointed the primary chain master link out, like normal, but the drive chain master link was pointed in towards the wheel. With this master link setup, no more master link lock clip issues.
It sounds like this may not be your problem, but just an issue to be aware of.
Like you, I have had been stopped along one section of this one road many times during the many years of riding on the pre-16 motorcycles tour out of the one area. Most times I was able to get back on the road, a few times, not so lucky. Because of that, I would always take it easy in that area.

I had a little Cannonball practice today. Patience slung her chain off. It hit the chain guard and broke the rear mount. I'll have to weld that tonight.
Fortunately I had a spare master link along. You guys all carry one, right? This time I will safety wire the clip.
A short walk back up the road and I got to watch a Miata run over my chain just before I got to it. No harm done and the guy gave me a lift back to my machine. His comment was "that looks like one of those Cannonball bikes!"
Here's the weird thing. Two years ago, just a couple of weeks before the 2016 Motorcycle Cannonball, I lost my throttle linkage pivot in the exact same place. I planted Patience firmly in the weeds trying to turn around with no throttle.

While I'm posting links, here's another one. Once again, Brenda will be keeping a daily Cannonball blog. Here's the link:

In addition to the classy T Shirts, Team Kelly's Heroes & Speed of Smell Racing will be bringing along on the Cannonball some of these nifty frisbees. All you need is a dog with a bandana and you're one of the cool kids. Or, bring a sharpie and have all the riders sign it for the perfect wall hanger for your shop or she-shed. Priced at a measly seven bucks. Cash only. No tax, no tracks.

Friends, Team Kelly's Heroes / Speed of Smell Racing will be offering T Shirts for sale during the 2018 Motorcycle Cannonball event. Look for us at the big white MotoVan in hotel parking lots along the way. Check the motorcycle cannonball website for our destination cities.
Here's the important part. Some of you may remember 'Pawn Shop' Paul Hamer, who was our team crew chief in 2016. The manger of Pauls store, Karen, has a daughter named Angie. Angie is 25 years old and has two small children. Angie had a stroke a couple of weeks ago. It turns out she has a condition called Moyamoya. Google it. She's probably looking at surgery and not being able to work for a while. Team Kelly's Heroes will be donating $5.00 from each T Shirt sale made during the Cannonball to Angies fund. I understand she also has a go fund me page, I will find a link and post it.
Thanks for listening. Here's a picture of the shirt.

Patience is together and working pretty well. The front end has lost its wobble. The transmission shifts like butter. Or as buttery as a non-synchro crash box can be anyway. The clutch is dialed in. The timing has been tweaked. I loosened up the tappet clearances and that is working well. The auto-oiler is working perfectly. The carb adjustments are pretty close. She has about 200 miles on her now, and I'll try to put another hundred or so on before I load her in the van.
I've been spending some time making improvements to the MotoVan. Here's a short video of my new toolbox set up:

In fact, I may just push the easy button and cut the three fingered wedge cone off of a bicycle gooseneck and attach it to the Indian gooseneck, rather than making one.

Like I said it might have to wait until you get back if you don't have the time now.
