    • Todays pic goes back to the '48 Panhead pics I posted. The guy standing with 2 nephews. He is my friend's Dad,Ron. This was Ron's 1st bike, a Cushman Vari Matic that he got when he was 13. Sitting on the bike was his girlfriend's best friend,Betty. A few years later he married his girlfriend. Early 1950s.

      • Another pic from Ron. This is the 1946 WL he traded his cushman for when he was 15. He got the WL from Johnson's HD in Muscatine Iowa about 1953. This is when Ron started to paint cars.

        • Iowa City Motorcycle Races at the Fairgrounds 1915, image property of University of Iowa Digital Library. Program for the races with LR Cole & Co ad. Pic that I think is back room at LR Cole, notice the numbers on the back wall that were pinned on the riders backs.

            • Yes that was the story, here is onother one from after the races!
              Stolen Wheel in bad wreck
Charged with practically stealing the motorcycle that was wrecked on his way home from Iowa City's Automobile races, 12 miles from town, en route to Cedar Rapids, Frank Warren was jailed at CR & is now awaiting a trial.
He is accused of stealing $20 in cash & a checkbook & using the funds to lease the big wheel that afterwards went on to smash on the rural highway as he sped homeward from Iowa City.
He confessed "the police say" to getting drunk after leaving Iowa city & guzzling "booze" on the road between drives.
Then he fell with his wobbling cycle & the machine went to the bad in the crash.
The police declare he also confessed to the theft & issuing the check for $27 drawn on the stolen slips.

                  • Yes that was 1914 the other story was the stolen wheel in a paper about 1 week later. I have all of the newspaper ads & clips from old research. I think F.R. Whitney was Frank Ray Whitney who was a boxer/promoter. Frank Ray Whitney (1885-1933) - Find a Grave Memorial

                      • Cedar Rapids-Marion, Ce-Mar Midget Bowl was a short track in an amusement park. I think this is 1946 because Tuman isn't expert yet. Edit; Ce-Mar opened in 1946 ...notice guys we have been talking about; Johnny Egeberg, Lloyd Tibbets, Charles Chenoweth, Johnny Spiegelhoff, Bob Pazour. Others like Lyle Smith was Rock Island Smitty's brother. Stormey Stocker was either dad or uncle to Roger Stocker, Indian Motocyle collector, often seen at Davenport meets.

                        • This pic was in my family photos. It only said Robert & Mary Walters. They were neighbors to my grandma. Turns out this is Bob Walters from Walters Bros HD in Peoria & Galesburg Illinois. Ambrose "Bruce" Walters was their older brother. This pic is about 1906-1908. In 1903, their father Vincent was killed when struck by lighting while sitting on his planter. Bruce born 1898,Bob 1900. Bruce bought a motorcycle age 15 & began racing. This was when Iowa City had races & there was another track at the ghost town of Pittsburg. Bruce & Bob started a motorcycle shop in Galesburg in 1922, later buying a Harley dealership. Bob ran Galesburg & Bruce ran Peoria. They started Galesburg M.C. & Peoria M.C.The world famous Peoria TT & other races were run by them.Notice Mike Wilson as one of the racers.Roger Soderstrom was a powerhouse TT racer & had his own dealership in Normal & later Bloomington Illinois...AMA Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame | Bruce Walters

                          • I met Bob at the Peoria store!

An open house of some kind, where he had a '36 or something with the wheels laced eccentrically on purpose. He had to explain to me that it was for fun.

                            (Bruce was before my time..)

                            • Cool, I rode a bicycle that had wheels like that. Crazy to ride. If in sync you didn't have to pedal once moving but out of sync was impossible to ride very fast,it would try to buck you off.
