has anyone removed this pin? screw? whatever it is , to remove the indicator so the plate can be painted? i am having no luck...thanks

Yes, I disassembled one to swap an Indian branded plate for Henderson plate and re-used the internal mechanism. No surprises.

How does the pin come out,do you press it out ? Thanks

I used a size-matched drift and carefully pressed it out (and back in). Look at the pin to see if one end is distorted and, if so, have that side come out first.
