Can anyone tell me what's involved in replacing the primary chain on a 48 chief . Specifically how to remove the rear sprocket ? Thanks.

To remove the cluctch basket you have to remove the trans top,nut on clutch basket inside the trans, kick start gear, and gen. drive pulley and key.
Then the primary chain and sprockets ,clutch and mainshaft can be slid out together.

In the AMCA virtual library is the Overhaul and Repair Manual, gives a pretty good description of the process

Hi , Thanks for the info . It's more complicated than I thought . I also think I have to much end play in the main shaft . I guess I have to figure that out too. Thanks guys.
