Hey Brian I have a pair of original paint tanks you could take measurements from or make a pattern. Except I'm in SE PA. Wouldn't want to ship them anywhere. Could bring them to Oley meet for you to take measurements there. Just a thought. PM me if interested.Ray

When I was restoring my 65 a few years ago I borrowed a set of origional paint tanks. Started measuring and laying tape and realized the left and right were not very close on the origional. Bottom lines were higher on one side and the radiuses didn't match. Looked to me that they were taped off by memory without a pattern.
I took what I thought was the best side and copied it then matched the other side on mine. Couldn't find the Lacqure so I went with the Holiday Red & Birch White enamel. Really like the colors.Kerry AMCA # 15911

Tank layouts almost never appear to match when layed on the bench.
Often mounting on a frame makes them match.
Does anyone have pics larger than a thumbnail of the '65 scheme for 3.5 tanks?
Thanks in advance,

Underdoggie - mine are 5 gallon
Here's the photo before teardown I was thinking of where you can see the back ends of the originals on the bike. Striping on the right is off and a little lower than the right:
Here's the photo with them off the bike from the front. Understand that Paul Friebus (American Cycle Fab) had them lined up tab to tab purposely to show the alignment of the paint being off. He patterned for the tanks in the background (these were from another '65 that the previous owner had painted, I bought the full set of sheet metal from his '65). You can see even from the front the right side is a little lower than the left tank:
Wanted to show the curve as copied to the repainted tanks. Paul got them EXACT to the originals. He asked me if I wanted the new takes to be misaligned like the originals or to be in alignment He actually didn't use a pattern/tracing at all. He used engineers dividers and the threaded holes from the emblems as well as the straps and other points to measure where the lines needed to be and the radius of the curve using multiple points as required. He mentioned that it was confusing him when he took the dividers from one tank to the other then realized what the issue was.
I'll check for those photos I think I have that show the originals well and follow up with another post. If I can't find them I can take closeup pics of the originals and post them. If I need to do that it might be a day or so.Last edited by rbenash; 01-21-2011, 04:58 PM.Ray
