Yes, It's the angel of view of the camera as well as the angle of the tanks in the stands in those photos. You really need to see the originals and these side by side and from the same angle, but these were the only ones I had handy.

Here's another photo of the originals still on the bike looking at the back at an angle. Looking close you can see the lines mismatch on the right tank (looks a tad lower):

I never actually noticed the lines being different till I started measuring. I laid mine out the same way (with dividers),putting little 1/2 " pieces of tape down as references for the fine line tape. I thought the differences in the origional paint I was copying was just a one time deal.

I took a picture this morning from the same point of view as Ray's and they look pretty close to me, I wonder if the slight mismatch in the back is from the mounting tabs on the frame.

I found this picture I took last year when I had the front end off, the lower part of the triple tree is in the way but they seem like to me they would come pretty close to lining up with the right side in the picture maybe higher, the you judge

Yeah, I hear you John. But thing is on mine the tops of the tanks were level when mounted where that rubber filler fits between the tanks and at the fronts. Also on my originals it was measurable when he was working with the dividers to do the copy on the duplicate set. Based on your under seat photo doesn't really look like yours are really off like mine were. Probably depends who was doing the painting the day they were done

Yeah, they were breaking in a new paint apprentice that day and when the boss asked how long he had been on the job he said "tirteen mora day be 2 week"

Here's another photo of the repaint that was measured exactly using multipoint divider measurements from the originals. Better view of where the curve actually starts. Also didn't forget about posting some photos of the originals. Try to get them posted this week.

There have never been any factory paint codes for H-D paint.

Chris is right. No factory formulas that I'm aware of.

That said there are a couple places that are selling match paints. In my case I was hesitant to go that route. Specifically because of the Hi Fi Blue. Over the last 10 years or so I've seen a number of Hi Fi Blue repaints, and only a couple got the blue right IMHO. Can't say why but they just looked off. Let alone getting the white placed right and the curve correct.

The paint work on my bike was done by Paul Freibus at American Cycle Fab. He mixed all the paints himself. He makes his own silver base using actual vintage silver powder. He mixes his own birch white. For the blue he took my originals, and did his own match and mix to the unfaded areas. He started with his own dyes and worked to the point that his match looked exactly the same under all light conditions. Then he called me to take a run up and we went through the process of looking at the sample along side the originals in all different light conditions. Then he painted.

Nice collection you've got there Chris. Peacock blue is one of my favorites. Saw one of the early Hydra Glides in the color, very nice. That silver hi heat is getting hard to find. Had a can that we used for my bike. Haven't seen any around since I bought that can about 5-6 years ago. Wold be nice to have another for spare/touch up. Have three of the glass jars of the baking enamel in Hi Fi blue, but they are clay balls though. Bar and shield logo. They were never opened. It was good enough to get a starting point on what color dye to start working with to come up with the right mix.
