  • 1965 Panhead Book Project

    Greetings All,

I have received permission from the External Communication Council at H-D to obtain access to the archives in conjunction with a book project intended to produce a definitive restoration guide for the 65 Pan. The purpose of this thread is to enlist the help of the great minds of the AMCA. :-)

The 1965 Panhead is almost an entire marque of its own. It is so different as to not be considered a 1964 plus 1 or a 1966 minus 1. It has many one year only items and the myths and legends that follow this motorcycle are almost endless.

To that end, I want to include a chapter on myths and legends of the 65. I think the club members familiar with this machine will be able to contribute in both a meaningful and profitable manner.

You can contribute to this boo in one of three ways:

    1) as a submitter of a question that you would like to see answered definitively in the book. Contributions of questions or issues that you want to make sure we cover are examples of this type of participation.

    2) as a submitter of a myth or legend regarding the 65. This can come in the form of a common myth and the information sufficient to dispel the myth or just something you believe to be true about the 65 but have never been able to find a definitive answer. As an example, you might submit something like "I believe all 1965 Panheads had white solenoid covers." If you have a definitive source for this assertion you can include it or just submit the information as your opinion.

    3) as a contributor of useful information that you believe might help make the book more of an accurate and useful resource.

Everyone who contributes in some measurable way will be included in the acknowledgements and a review panel will be solicited from the contributors to review the final manuscript and make comments or corrections prior to going to press.

I hope to make this a fun project that as many of you that want to be involved in some way can participate. Based on our present time table, the book should be in press by early Spring.

I'm looking forward to your posts and your suggestions for making the book a useful tool for our community.

    Cheers,
    George and Kyle Marakas

        Interesting for sure

The first Big Twin Harley I ever rode was a 65 at the age of 16... I didn't like it then, LOL I have a low mileage repainted unrestored one in my barn which I enjoy. Funny because I wasn't even looking for another M/C when this one showed up locally, couldn't let it go by even though it was repainted the same Blk/Wt Gotta love them, Keep riding them, Merlin in Pa.

Merlin thats funny I have had many 65s but the nicest one I ever bought only had 2500 miles I bought it in Reading and was lost in a dealership fire were it was on display !! It haunts me to this day!!!!!We used it as areferance to any other 65 it was a early production model so some things and fasteners were differant.

The 1965 line started out with the oil screen in the right crank case. Sometime during production it was eliminated, then later brought back again. It would be nice if you could figure out when this was done. Why would be another story.

              Just what the doctor ordered

Thanks to all of you for joining in. Chris, I have already made a note on the oil screen and I will try to get some definitive info on it.

I have 6 65 pans and, as you suggest, some have them and some don't. I will line up the VINs and see if I can estimate the intervals. In any event, it is on the list of questions to be answered.

              Great stuff!

                The end of the overhead oil screen came somewhere in the upper four-digit VINs;
All five-digit VINs that I have encountered were plugged, but I have encountered one high 4-digit that was plugged as well.

Plugging the oil screen was just one of the many stupid things that occurred during the ever-changing production run!

Since this project could result in volumes and volumes of data and photos, why don't we take over this dead mailing list?:

It needs the spam cleaned out, but I'm certain the moderator would gladly turn it over!

                  oil screens

Thanks for the input, Cotten. This is what the project needs.

I think your idea is a good one regarding the list. I am building a wiki that will be available for all makes and models and all club members.

At this point, any contributions of substance (i.e. large files, etc.) can be sent directly to my email address (gmarakas@kandgcycles.com). I will be sure to post a summary of the contribution on the thread and will add those materials to the contributors list. Right now, I have a rather large database of materials that have been scanned and notes taken, etc. I want to keep the materials for the text organized by chapter so as to make my work a little less insane.

I know the knowledge is out there and it looks like people are eager to get involved. Thanks for the support.

                  Cheers,

                    Bad Wristpin Run?

                    Just to feed the fires....
Has anyone ever heard a legend about a bad run of wristpins during the '65 production?

Attached is a photo of an example that split lengthwise in half, as well as in the middle into fourths (suspended upon a lucite rod for display).

Note the the keepers remain in place!

                      Hi Cotten,

I have some notes on this issue. Apparently, the metal was defective. At least that was what was told to me. These are exactly the issues I need to collect so I can ask the questions.

H-D has been sending me emails asking about more specifics regarding the resources I am requesting. So far, I have unfettered access to the 65s in the collection, blueprints, productions orders, and an archive specialist who has more than average knowledge regarding the 65. Between that and my AMCA friends, I think we will end up with something pretty good.

Again, thanks for keeping the fire lit.

Time for an update on the book project.

I owe a huge debt to several of the members who have already begun contributing knowledge and materials. Each of you will receive prominent mention in the book and will be instrumental in the creation of a, hopefully, valuable resource to our members and beyond.

Currently, I am working on "color of the bolt" issues (aren't we always?). If anyone has any images of really well done 65 Panheads, I would appreciate the opportunity to look at them. They will not be used for publication in any event without written permission from the owner. We have plenty of exemplars in our collection but want to confirm all finish issues as much as possible before we head North to motorcycle mecca.

Also, I still am looking for the September 1964 issue of Enthusiast that has the new model year release information. If anyone has that issue, I am willing to pay to have the two pages copied. Also, if anyone has a copy of the 1965 order blank, I would like to review that, as well. The Archives does not have a copy as the AMF idiots destroyed some documents and a fire destroyed some more. Apparently, some of the more recent records of the time were among those lost. In any event, any help will be greatly appreciated.

                        Thanks to all.
