But if you want to avoid the hazards of a hammer, make an anvil that holds the drum securely so you can apply a press.
(I'd avoid a hydraulic press, however...)
Held upon the press ram by a forktube boot is a motorvalve with the stem cut and ground concave to form the rivet without hammermarks.
The anvil had a similar relief for the rivet head.
