So far, it only appears to me that the somebody ground upon the idle side casting, for some unknown reason...

I don't think it is repop but it looks like it was lightly polished and maybe chromed at one time.
With those numbers gone on the left side maybe somebody took a different carb and faked it as a M%.

My notes show only M5s had a 4 stamp there.
