    Although its been a quarter century, I sure thought the mains were smaller than the crankpin on a 45".

      I'm no expert, but my engineering background thinks the sprocket (and to a lesser extent, pinion) shaft taper has to resist twisting and spinning in the flywheel where the crank pin is only side loaded, and just has to resist misalignment of the wheels.

        You shock it.

        There's more from pounding pistons than from chain snatch.

        (But come to think of it, I've never found a loose taper in any motor, ever. Just skewed a bit.
        The loose tapers were all in the drivetrain!)
