VL Trans rebuild

No problem at all Steve, I have some loose springs.

All the old ones average to 1.60+ whereas the new springs are 1.55+ oddly enough. It seems to me there are some design weak points but those springs aren't one of them.

That's odd as my new springs that I bought from Easy Russ several years ago measure 1.60+ and my old springs are 1.50+or - so I thought the new springs might be too tall.

Enjoyed reading your trans rebuilding, I rebuild them also not quite as thoroughly as you. The only thing I’ve noticed is when using the sealed bearings the 2288-17 bearing washer on drive side has slight contact with bearing race so I open up washer so it’s larger , also the stepped washer 2151-31 now rides on bearing race on shaft this may cause washer and spring to turn ,I make a new washer to hold spring and dosent touch bearing like original one. Ray

Wouldn't that have been happening anyway? My 2288-17 shows a slight rub ring where the original inner bearing race would've contacted it. I guess the biggest difference now is there is no lube leaking to those area's.

I have noticed slight wAsher rub on originals
When you install sealed bearings on the kicker side the inner bearing race is outboard about.060 more that’s why I make changes. That washer would be constantly rubbing.

60 thousand. Enough to move washer away from bearing retainer

I'm curious to know how that happens if you're using a 6304 bearing? As Grumpa states in post #50 there's only 5 to 6 thou difference in the width of old vs new.

Dear All, don't forget that sealed bearings moves the gearbox mainshaft relative to the clutch, so you will probably need a new 2500-19 thrust washer under the clutch hub bearing. Harley made this in 0.006" size increments so must have thought it important. Too thin allows for wobbly clutch, two thick binds the clutch drum and drags the clutch after rebuild, which is even more annoying.

It’s not the width that’s different. The original bearing race is not centered,there is some offset If you measure from inner race to outside face of threaded retainer on original vrs installed 6304 bearing you will see the difference

Right, got it now thanks. My g'box came in pieces so I never had the original bearing to compare to the sealed one. I went back and looked at Grumpa's photo in post #50 and you can sorta see how the inner sits off centre to the outer.

I'd be interested in the details of your new washer if your able to share it? I'm sure others would as well.

Bottom left and right are homade stamps. On retainer is stamped washer. I just finished another VL Tranny today,same issues. Hope this helps. Ray
