  • Rear Crash Bars and Sidecar

Can you leave rear crash bars on a 46 U and mount side car or does it have to be off

The sidecar and safety guard mount in the same place. So it is one or the other but not both.

Nonsense, the mounts are designed so both can be used together.

My 44UL with sidecar and rear crash bar. Same way it has been the last 45 years....

Robbie that is exactly what I wanted to hear. I thought I could put a spacer under the top of the hack mount . Is there any way you can take a picture of the mount set up the next time you pass by your UL. Thanks.

The sidecar mount does not bolt directly to the frame, it has spacers in between, the crashbar and a washer take the place of one spacer. It is quite simple. And the toe in is correct with the spacers.

Then why is it in all factory photos of rigid frame sidecar machines there is no rear guard?

For the same reason factory photos don't show rear guards on solo machines either, rear guards are options, not part of any standard group. Factory photos don't show it all....

                Robbie,
Do you have the part number, or a description, for the spacers you mention? I don't see any spacers in my parts books.
                Thanks,

Did you notice the quantity of nuts listed? The spacers are the same nuts that hold the mount on.

i have had rear crash bars on all 3 of my sidecar rigs. 1937u, 1938ul, & 1968flh.
i sold a sidecar & installed it on a friends 1940ulh that has a rear crash bar, so i think i am qualified to say they fit just fine.

Having slid down the road I understand how spill bars protect legs. After putting a sidecar on I removed front and rear bars, don't understand there function on a sidehack rig.

They're handles for pushing; to get the rear wheel out of a hole. I've always run rear bars. They finish the shape of the machine down the left side, and they act as leather-saddlebag guards.

Point taken, place for siren to mount and highway pegs also. Just never gonna work as intended.
