I will work for anybody that can teach me cool stuff.

Yesterday I got my clutch all sorted out. After cleaning quite a few different parts up that were all wore out, Dale ended up giving me a setup that was already put together. I just had to take it apart, clean it, and throw it back together.

It has been really nice here the last couple days. Dale decided yesterday was a good time to let me ride my first foot clutch without a sidecar. It is a '32 vl in a '31 chassis.

Disclaimer: Dale had special dirt shipped in that was extra soft and completely safe, it is the only kind in the world... Safety, Safety, Safety is the moto at Wheels Through Time!!

And here was my ride for today...This is Matt's '38 knuck! I'm getting spoiled here!

Even with it being so nice out, we did get the motor mostly put together and here I am putting it in the frame with the transmission.

    Hey Ryan,
If you enjoy traveling around the country building other peoples stuff I'll give ya my address.
There is no better education than doing it hands on with a masters help. Hats off to Dale for his teaching.

    I'll do you one better...how about 2?

Well ok, it was a little longer than one evening and I did have help from a 45" master. All in all, it was challenging but not too bad. I wouldn't think twice about doing it on my own next time. Here is Dale's tranny going into the frame that just got back from paint today.

Here are the nos sprockets that will be going on both of the transmissions

Now I am working on the clutches for both. Here are some of the parts.

Couldn't tell real well by the pic but in the usable parts pic, that second and high shifter clutch looked pretty well worn.
I believe that picture was taken before I got all the parts really clean before I put them in, that might be what you are seeing. All the parts that I used passed Dale's inspection.

riding a foot clutch bike for the first time is definitely an eye opening experience.
    It was definitely really cool.

You guys set an impressive pace! Keep up the good work.
    Thanks, I will try

We got most of the transmission wrapped up this morning. Now Dale has me rebuilding another one of his for him for practice! This is after I tore it all part, it wasn't nearly as difficult to take apart.

All the parts that were inside...

And here is the case after some scrubbing and blasting

I am going to keep going at this and hopefully have them both done tonight.

im gonna try and make it down to wheels through time sometime this next summer.
You should definitely try, this is really the coolest place I have ever been!

Yesterday we got a lot done on the motor. The bottom end is all put together, only a few more things and it will be good to go!

We decided to take a break from that project though and start on my transmission.

It took a lot of heat and strength but it eventually came apart.

There were a lot of worn out parts in it but these parts are what we could reuse.

These are all the worn out parts.

After I got the case mostly cleaned up we found this nasty crack.

So Dale dug out another usable case from his stash that he let me use.

After fighting with it for a long time, this is where it stands as of about 12:30 last night

Yesterday was also a really big day for me because Dale let me ride my first foot clutch bike! He sat in the sidecar and gave me directions...he is a brave man!

Of course this picture was taken after the ride, it does not show the full suit of armor that both of us were wearing...safety first in North Carolina!

Here is the cylinders all cleaned up, painted, and put back together...not to bad for a days work!

Here is the bottom end all torn down.

And look at this little surprise...one of the bearing cages exploded at some point...that could explain why it wasn't in a bike when Dale found it.

If everything goes as planned we will finish the whole motor today. The frame is supposed to be back from paint sometime mid-week so I might get to help put this whole bike together!

Great job on the tank! Did you clearcoat over the decals?
Thanks! Yup there is clear overtop of them.

Dale didn't mess around putting me to work yesterday. We started working on rebuilding this motor first thing in the morning.
    Photobucket

Check it out, its a 1942 wld...this is a very rare motor, its the only one Dale and Matt have ever seen! The reason it is so rare is because it is a race motor but since the war started in December of '41, there was only a few month window from around September when they started making the next year bikes to December to make a race motor. After that, all production switched to war bikes.

Dale originally thought it had never been opened since leaving the factory but as we got more into it, he realized that someone had taken it apart sometime around the '50s because of the type of piston that was in it.

You can see on the left head it looks like a ring may have let go at some point.

Here Matt and I are struggling trying to get the manifold off.

    The cylinder are off!!

Here are all the new old stock parts that will be going in the top end.

These cylinders were not ported but Dale wanted them to be so we took an already ported cylinder to copy.

This is the one we copied off of.

He showed me how to do the first one and then cut me loose on the second. Man oh man am I getting good ideas for my bike while I'm here!!
