Hi everyone, i have a 59 panhead with a documented original sidecar. My question is, is there an original front exhaust pipe available that accomodated the bar that is mounted on the bike to connect the front point of the sidecar? Mine looks like someone took a hammer to flatten the pipe so the bar would fit the sidecar. Sounds confusing but maybe someone understands what i am talking about

You'll find that the special "sidecar mount" indented front exhaust pipes have only a superfluous factory indentation. You will have to "custom fit" the front downpipe to fit around the sidecar mount, anyway.
I found that the best way is to remove the sidecar mount, fit the exhaust pipe in place, and with a steel rod or a pipe just a little larger diameter than the shaft of the sidecar mount, place it through the frame loops and work it (a little "blacksmithing") until the steel rod clears the location of the sidecar mount, leaving a crescent-shaped indentation in the right place.
It makes for a far neater installation than just "flattening the pipe with a hammer" if you make a neat, crescent indentation where it should be, leaving about an eighth-inch or so air-gap clearance around the sidecar mount shaft. There's no need to transfer exhaust heat directly through contact with the bike. The amount the exhaust flow is "throttled" is negligible, even if it's almost half the diameter of the exhaust pipe, and won't really affect engine performance

Being as I don't have my Funk & Wagnall handy I'm not sure about what "superfluous" means. Here is the pipe that Tom Faber sells. It looks like it has plenty of clearance.

Drive? No need to drive yourself, Hawg! Just rent a bus and charter a bus tour, long way around the continent, selling tickets and filling the seats along the way. You'll fill a bus easily, maybe a couple of them, long before you reach Kali! Sounds like a money-making enterprise 2me.Originally posted by Mr. Big View PostHawg, I think you need to drive on down to Kali and just take a swing at him and get it over with. Geeeezzzz.........

Looks can be deceiving, BTW. My poor word choice; when I used "superfluous" I meant that the indentation on the supplied ones is "superficial." Look that one up. I haven't seen a front exhaust pipe yet that didn't need some help, some customization, to clear the front lower sidecar connection. About 50% of the diameter of the pipe seem to work about right.Originally posted by Chris Haynes View PostBeing as I don't have my Funk & Wagnall handy I'm not sure about what "superfluous" means. what a great idea - what about doing it in the time frame of cannonball 2012 leave new york bringing anyone who want to follow the cannonballers from start to finish, can pick up others on the route. chris was way to happy be at the final party for 2010, he will probably want to get into the final party in 2012, killing 2 birds with one stone. I will try to get barry to drive bus #2Originally posted by Sargehere View PostDrive? No need to drive yourself, Hawg!
