Dear All, I'm a big fan of improved communication in our Club, but I'm now hearing we have a Bulletin Board with 10% max of the membership registered, some people hiding behind aliases, some perhaps not even AMCA members, some able to delete messages, and no plans for change. I think we need to do better.

I for one would like to see real names, and state and country of origin behind posters aliases, in an attempt to curtail any spineless rants that degrade our club, that so many of us are pouring our genuine efforts into.
Apparently there has been some deleted, or mysteriously erased posts also. I see no myth in any of Steve Slocombe's allegations here Chris. I only hope that Steve may be incorrect with the fact that there are no plans for change.

check your numbers again, there are 2,609 members on the forum, that works out to be 25%+ not 10%. as for "aliases" read my previous post about members valuing their privacy. also stated you can only delete your own messages.
the changes are already there, you need to be an AMCA member to be approved now.
Originally posted by Red Fred View PostI can attest to most of these allegations mentioned here. Kevin has stated in the past of non-members being able to post, but I believe he has since fixed that issue.

you also need to read my post again,
I NEVER said non-members, I said "as you know we have a lot of members that value their privacy, they check not to be listed in the club roster and did not fill in their information on the forum."Last edited by kval; 05-24-2010, 06:00 PM.Kevin Valentine 13

I can understand that somebody might have reasons for withholding their identity on a forum that is open to anybody to join such as Flat head power and Buss Canters forum, Why would a fellow club member want to keep his name and membership number or the state where he lives secret on this our clubs forum which is for the use of club members only? Making this information avalable would not leave them open to have their computer hacked of their garage broken into.
Members withhold their details from the clubs roster because they do not want unsolicited contact by other members. By posting on this forum they are taking part in a community activity, just as if they were talking to a fellow club member at a meet it seems strange they would not want them to know who they are.
The heading of this forum says CUMMUNITY why not let your fellow club members know who you are?

I agree with Pete. Why not drop the so called secrecy and adopt a stance of transparency and use real names and membership numbers. It seems to me that it is like calling someone out from behind mama's billowing skirt.........................I "want" to be known truly as who I am, not some pseudynom (sp?). If someone has something to say that is derogatory, be a man. Let's see who you really are. We certainly have seen enough of that lately. And I am truly sick of it. Not what I joined this club for.......

Pete I agree with you to a point. Anyone that’s a member here can be sent a PM. I don’t know how Kevin has it set up right now but like most forums there is a check off to not publicly show your information. Why anyone would check this is beyond me. I have to assume that after reading Kevin’s posts that you have to show a active club member number to register. A name and AMCA number isn’t going to get you robbed. I got another take on this and it would be insecurity. A lot of the older membership are new to computers and with reading the news these days with stories of hackers and idenedy theft. I can see were their head might be at. Bob L

what you are forgetting is that the forum can be read by anybody, only members can post. and if you think that giving their information is not a threat, tell that to the members that had their garage broken into and had bikes and tools stolen while they were attending a meet.
by giving as suggested by some, a name, state and country it is just a click away to find directions to your house and all your possessions.Kevin Valentine 13

Taking Kevin's statement and our understanding of how the forum functions as the gospel truth, that only the person posting can delete their post, we still have a situation where a post disappeared not by the hand of the person posting. I would suggest that one way in which that could occur is if there is a problem with a hosting server drive.
We use SQL servers at work and they are quite reliable. However on occasion a hard drive will fail. There are redundant hard drives but even so we have had situations where data has been lost. Perhaps a similar situation has occurred here.
As far as having difficulty posting, it has happened to me on many occasions. When I sign on, reply to a post but take awhile to hit the reply button I am required to log back on before the post will appear. If I screw up and give the wrong password to log on at that point, when I get it right the second time, the reply I worked so hard on is gone!
Also, if I am interrupted in writing the reply and am not keying in for a period of time, my reply disappears.
No magic, no conspiracy, just that for whatever reason I exceed the time parameters in which to do my business. I would think that would explain most of these types of posting issues.
And considering the rather, shall I say, "harsh" comments from one person to another here in the blog, one should never say something here they would not say to that person directly. Or have not already said in person.Lonnie Campbell #9908
