  • 6V Delco Remy Horn - need help

Have an original 6v horn on my 47 FL. Horn doesn't work when power and ground applied to posts. I have continuity between the posts. I opened the horn to look for anything obvious and nothing jumped out at me although Im not very familiar with its operation. The posts are insulated from the housing and test that way.

Any info or ideas on what to look for appreciated. Also, what does the adjustment screw on back do? Is that for adjusting tone?

    Thanks!

Here is some info on horn repair. I was able to restore my 47 Indian horn with this procedure.

Did some digging per the instructions. I have .3ohms through my windings. When I energized the coil, I don’t get enough magnetic force to pull the core and tit down.

does anyone make replacement parts for this horn? During disassembly the terminal insulators on both sides of the housing disintegrated.

any thoughts on how to fix the coil?

As long as you are measuring .3 ohms and not an open circuit, the magnetic force should be operational. Your adjustments are probably way off. It won't budge if its adjusted wrong.

You can energize it and pick up a steel nail to test the magnet. Be mindful of your battery. This is basically a short circuit and will drain the battery fast so make sure to re-charge. Also, if your battery is old and low amperage (NOT voltage but load tested-amperage), the horn may not function correctly.

Thanks for the coaching! Will hook barely to charger and start messing with the large center adjustment. When I energize the coil, I get a light magnetic attraction, not super strong.

Eddie, not sure how you are going about this but you will need to take the horn apart carefully and clean it up which includes cleaning the point contacts gently with fine 600 sandpaper and then polishing the contacts with 1500. My horn was missing the gasket and I had to make one. The gasket ensures that it is sealed from water and sets up the correct end play. There are two tone adjustments. The large center which gets it "in the ballpark" and the small screw/lock adjustment to adjust tone. Be advised that it changes tone from being on the workbench to when it's bolted back on the bike and may need a fine adjustment when its finally installed.

Make sure when you re-assemble the parts that the tabs line up. Remember, nothing moves unless the points are clean. You need the clean point contact in order to complete the circuit. Heavy sandpaper will ruin the finish of the points so be careful.

By the way, the weak magnetic situation that you are describing sound like dirty contact points. Not enough current is passing through them to "light" the coil up.

When you get to the point that you have buzzing and tone, you adjust the tone to sound like the Jeep from an episode from MASH. MEEP-MEEP.

Thanks DEEBS! pics and info appreciated. What material did you make the gasket out of? My horn doesn't have a gasket either. I assume it goes between the diaphragm and the body? I also see what looks like rubber under the studs that pass thru the body, did you make those? My horn has some sort of cardboard insulator that is deteriorated.
