    10. When I got the bowl off, I discovered an ugly, shriveled-up, old dead cork float inside. When tested in water it seemed to work okay, but then I got to hunting around in my old junk and found this nice black foam(?) late model H-D float. It was in a Big Twin carb that somebody had chopper-chromed the bowl on and put in a brand-new float and then overdosed or something. Now it's inside the carb on Mr. Servi-Car. Nicest thing on the whole machine and it makes him feel good too! Here's the old dead float sitting on top of the new good one.

"and then overdosed or something"? I hate to hear stuff like that when people give up hope, or succumb to addiction.

Old cork float looks typical. Shellac or varnish -Punctured, swollen, dried up.
Cottons foam floats are great. Very delicate things.

Yeah, me too. Why anybody would chrome a float bowl in the first place is beyond me, altho nothing seems beyond the imagination of the chopper crowd.

I shouldn't talk like that. I was a believer once myself.

This black float I found seems to be of a dense foam material too. Seems like type you could get from H-D in the 1970s yet.

This digicamera is REALLY fun. You can shoot pix, load them into your computer, view them with ImageBrowser, re-size them in a photo program, and then upload them to the internet or add them to a webpage. Jumping back and forth between 5 different programs.

And the old Servi-Car saga continues:

          11. With all that rust in the gas tank I figured that adding a filter to the fuel line would be cheap insurance. So I rummaged around some more and found this old plastic job. Okay, I'd prefer the orig. metal line, but if you look close you'll see there's already a non-H-D petcock on the gas-tank.

            12. First test ride on a cold early January day. Got about half way out when engine started missing like crazy. So I turned around and beat it for home. Seemed to run better with the choke partly on.

              13. Back home again and after it warmed up a little I figured that the carb needed adjusting as I had taken the needles out and no doubt messed them up. So I got out "Questions & Answers" by good old "Uncle Frank" to refresh myself on the orig. carb settings.

                14. If you aren't familiar with or own a copy of "Questions and Answers" by Uncle Frank, you really should glom onto one. It has TONS of useful information about Harleys and Indians and valuable charts and tables on motorcycle stuff in general. This is an original "Army Service Edition" but there were several others plus modern reprints. Can't recall the year it first came out, but I'd guess like 1938 or 1939 maybe? I sort of think that Bill Knuth had something to do with its publication.

Quiz time: Anybody know who "Uncle Frank" really was??????????

                  15. Hey what's that acorn doing down there?

Not only was the carb badly in need of adjustment, but I found the sparkplug wires jumping around loose, plus several years of red squirrels and other critters messing with my trike. So I adjusted the carb, crimped the plug ends better, and cleaned the plugs. Good enough!

                    16. Since it snowed before I took Mr. Servi-Car out again (and I don't like being seen) I donned my winter camo so I wouldn't be spotted. Notice how I blend in almost perfectly with the woods. That keeps the EPA off my butt for all those inperfectly combusted hydro-carbons the old 45 side-valve is spewing into the environment.

                    Next: donut time!

All that snow! Looks like you are having some fun Herb. We have a little snow on N. facing slopes, but otherwise gone. I live in the LaCrosse, WI area. I got a hundred miles on the pan today, 40-50 degrees. Would have been more, but harrassment and tavern stops got in the way. What a treat to ride around in relative comfort at the end of January. Herb, I am curious, do you have a helper operating the camera or do you have the camera on a stump and timer function very well managed? I really do not think it matters what you wear for camo, nobody will notice you, they will all be looking at the machine.

                          koanes:

Your mention of tavern stops reminds me of a time years ago when three of us were out on a January ride out of Racine and crashed a snowmobile club's annual party. They were amazed when 3 motorcycles pulled up, two of them with sidecars (there was snow but the roads were bare).

The LaCrosse area is a WONDERFUL ride as you know. One of my favorite rides is north out of LaCrosse along the Great River Road. If you cross the river a couple times you can hang close with the Mississippi River in sight nearly all of the time. Of course you already know that. But have you ever gone north of Maiden Rock on Hwy-35 and then up along the Rush River valley? That is a very nice bike ride too.

The engineers from Harley used that country for a lot of their weekend test rides in the 1930-40s. L.A. Doerner was killed south of LaCrosse on one such ride near Victory in 1936 or 1937. I forget just which.

As to your question of who's taking the photos, they were shot both using a tripod and the camera's timer function and another time with a helper taking the photos. The camera has both a 2 and 10 second timer function. These digicams are great. Next I want to get an underwater housing for it for summer snorkeling expeditions.

I'd sure like to get that 200 lb 10 point buck! Trouble is, they always seem to see me first. They are certainly around in these woods and swamps, but I usually have to settle for Bambi.

There is a great pix of Squibby with a big Rhinelander buck in his VL sidecar around 1930. I think it made the cover of Enthusiast. You guys have probably seen it.

I don't have a lot room for doing them, but I did get some modest donut pix.

Looks like we might be getting more snow (after a warm spell), so I might get the chance yet to throw on the tire chains.

                              17. Taking off down the road for a few little donuts and fun slide effects. This time I had a photographer taking the shots.

                                18. This is not a turn but coming straight down the trail with the tail section swinging side-to-side. Mr. Servi-Car gives you oscillating motion in the back just by tweaking the handlebar a little bit which cranks the entire frame section on the neck. The front end goes straight ahead while the back increasingly fishtails as wildly as you desire. Looks and feels crazy and occasionally you will spin out so beware.
