    Paul,
I looked at Greer's for that since they show the late version. That u-bolt is 2.625 long so your spacing would be that or based on that center to center, right? They use a 5/16"-24 that is 1.625 diameter. I also have the plate because I thought it was standard since I saw it so often being sold that I just forgot to check if that changed. That's one of the hard-to-find parts, so I've never had one. Wouldn't a center measurement on the plate holes be more accurate than guessing about the u-bolt?
Here's the 1941 manual I pulled the photo from that had the plate. -JR

      Thanks JR

I was thinking more along the lines of the overall width and height of the bars as well as the distance between the two lower mounting points.

I don't know. I have only seen them in photos. I would like to know also.

I can only give information on Sport Scout bars….I don’t have any 741 bars to compare

Here are the sections in the parts lists for the 640B (military Sport Scout) ….

          IMG_4005.jpeg

and here are the parts for the “early” 741 Scouts….

          IMG_4006.jpeg

As you can see, different part numbers for the bars and the plate..

The bar assembly for the 640B is 75658, the same number that Greers listed as 1936 to 1942 Sport Scout bars, which makes sense.

The 741 bar assembly 76159 and plate 44231 are different, but the u bolts are the same.

But what is the difference? My guess is both bars are the same width, but the 741 bars should be shorter cause the front frame down tube is shorter then the Sport Scout (the cylinders are shorter and it gave the bike more ground clearance ). I’m thinking the 741 mounting plate is also shorter as shown in an earlier picture, my guess is to clear the frame mounted horn.

I’ll post some rough measurements of the Sport Scout crash bars….

These Sport Scout bars are tweaked a bit, but to give you an idea… IMG_4017.jpeg

Thanks Joe; That is helpful. I am building (slowly) a non-matching #s civilianized 741 not a resto so when I get to the point of shopping for crash bars very useful information.

Yeah, thanks Joe. I'll let both of you know if I get a set soon.
