after a 10 mile ride i checked the cylinder heads temperature and they were around 400 degrees, what is the normal running temp,? any thoughts? thanks

If it is overheating - Possible manifold air leak or timing is off. Also, carb too lean but I assumed it was running OK up to this point. Valve lash should be checked too.Last edited by DEEBS47Chief1991; 08-04-2025, 09:42 AM.

A tuned choice of carb should not affect motor heat.
Its hard to get 'closer' than two 45" side-valve twins.
Beware that attempting to read temperatures on a stopped air-cooled motor invites artifacts.

PS: AMCA judges would call 'incorrect' on an M741 as well.Last edited by T. Cotten; 08-04-2025, 02:00 PM.AMCA #776

Sometimes parts-swapping ain't enough,
(And considering repop quality, maybe worse.)
We aren't really sure you are over-heating, so let's not add any more variables.

Like the 101, they were air-cooled.
Our infrared guns might make sense with a dyno; Otherwise, the infinite variables make them as pointless as an oil pressure gauge.

Only carries 'some' heat away from the coolest part of the motor.
Both top ends only get mist at best, combust similar amounts of fuel at similar compressions, and will always be hotter than the crank;
The top end warms the cases, the cases don't cool the top end.

Like T.Cotten said, high to low
The second law of thermodynamics A simple statement of the law is that heat always flows spontaneously from hotter to colder regions of matter (or 'downhill' in terms of the temperature gradient).
So we put ice in our drinks to warm the ice.
