    29 101 scout running hot

after a 10 mile ride i checked the cylinder heads temperature and they were around 400 degrees, what is the normal running temp,? any thoughts? thanks

If it is overheating - Possible manifold air leak or timing is off. Also, carb too lean but I assumed it was running OK up to this point. Valve lash should be checked too.

there is a linkert m-16 carb on it, i know this is incorrect it should be a dlx 64 or a m741, would you think this could make that much difference ? And do you think the wla is close enough to the indian 45?

If everything is in order, Chris,..

A tuned choice of carb should not affect motor heat.

Its hard to get 'closer' than two 45" side-valve twins.

Beware that attempting to read temperatures on a stopped air-cooled motor invites artifacts.

PS: AMCA judges would call 'incorrect' on an M741 as well.

              With ninety-five year-old hardware, Chris,

              Sometimes parts-swapping ain't enough,

(And considering repop quality, maybe worse.)

We aren't really sure you are over-heating, so let's not add any more variables.

I never had a scout, but have had and have numerous chiefs and used to check cylinder head temps with my IR gun.
I never saw or see readings that were below low to mid 400s.

The WLA is a recirculating oli engine and will run cooler than a once-through oiling motor. Did you leave out the oil control rings, at least on the front cylinder? And how much piston clearance? I'd put the pyrometer away and put miles on the bike.

WLAs do not recirculate oil through their heads or cylinders, Steve,

Like the 101, they were air-cooled.

Our infrared guns might make sense with a dyno; Otherwise, the infinite variables make them as pointless as an oil pressure gauge.

But the recirculating oil does get hot, so is removing heat from the engine. That's why recirculating oil motors run cooler than once-through oiling.

                        Recirculated oil, Steve,

Only carries 'some' heat away from the coolest part of the motor.

                        Both top ends only get mist at best, combust similar amounts of fuel at similar compressions, and will always be hotter than the crank;

The top end warms the cases, the cases don't cool the top end.

Like T.Cotten said, high to low

The second law of thermodynamics A simple statement of the law is that heat always flows spontaneously from hotter to colder regions of matter (or 'downhill' in terms of the temperature gradient).

So we put ice in our drinks to warm the ice.

                            Cold isn't real.
