  • 1941 Indian 741 speedometer question

If I want to find a 741 speedometer , cable, and drive, where would I look? Thanks

  • #2
    a 741 speedometer , cable,

    John:
I have a 741 parts pile that unfortunately does not include a speedo.
In fact I need to find a speedo bracket to have welded/brazed to my front end at some point.
How 'original' are you aiming for

I have heard that WW2 era jeep speedometers or repos of same have been used on 741s perhaps someone here can confirm?

For immediate gratification Mark Barthelmie of Crazyhorse Indian Au has these:

    crazyhorsemoto.com.au/products/replica-741-speedometer-australian-made?_pos=2&_sid=530436058&_ss=r

    crazyhorsemoto.com.au/products/00043809-speedometer-cable-741?_pos=1&_sid=530436058&_ss=r

Exchange rate may be in your favor depending where you are located.
I have done business with Mark in the past and he has treated me well.

      HI Paul,
Thanks for the info. I'm in Canada and a friend just bought a 741 with the wrong speedometer. He needs my help. LOL

Check Ebay listings for speedo_rat for a Canadian source. Janus died a year ago but his wife is clearing inventory. When she is out of the country there will be no listings.

I have a NOS 741 lighted speedo on my '41 Sport Scout. I would be happy to trade up or down to get a nice civilian 110 with trip meter. The only difference is the trip meter (I believe).

            Eric,

I don't know what speedo you have but the sport scout speedo the drive comes out the side of the speedo body then down between the tanks to the rear wheel where the 741 the drive comes out the bottom of the body then down along the forks to the front wheel.

Hey Eric,You most likely have a military chief or military 640b speedo,110mph lighted,no trip odometer and no max speed hand.
As joe mentioned 741 is a bottom drive,100mph,lighted no trip or max hand.

I think you're both right. Must be military Chief, or Scout. Gorgeous speedo, just no trip meter. I'll live with it
