      • I appreciate it, Tom!

Kevin, it was a pleasure meeting you this September.

New question: Did someone add these strips to the inside of the tanks later on, or is it supposed to be there? They go completely around the inside of both tanks.
        Thanks, Dale

          • Nice job soldering the oil tank fitting. Did you use a torch or an iron?

            • Hey, Kevin! A friend of mine, Robbie, took care of it for me using a torch. I messed with it a bit with an iron and a torch with less than stellar results. He did a nice job. I pressure tested the gas tanks and found a couple of small leaks in the seams. Also the fitting for the shut of rod on top of the right tank broke loose so I'm not sure if I want to mess with them too much. I ordered up a set of repro tanks to hold fuel when the time comes. On a side note, Kevin, what oil did you use on your Cannonball ride?

Soldering those oil tanks is difficult business. I did mine with a mini butane torch. Still, I would solder one leak and cause another one to open up. Eventually I got it, but some people tell me an electric soldering iron, like one of those big 750 watt ones, works better. I'll probably try that next time.

I didn't know that anyone was reproducing tanks for 1917 Indians. Where did you get them, if you don't mind me asking?

I used Valvoline 50w VR-1 racing oil. It has some zinc in it, the price is reasonable, and it's on the shelves at many auto parts stores. I've also used 50w Lucas motorcycle oil.

                Thanks for posting your progress!

                • It just might be! Thank you for the heads up, Steve. I appreciate it.

Kevin, Christian from Geloman had them listed so I contacted him and he said they were identical to original. They should be here soon. Thanks for the info on the oil.

                  Merry Christmas everyone! Dale

                  • I believe it's time to start thinking about having the carb looked at and freshened up a bit. Does anyone have a recommendation on who the right person to do this might be? Thanks! Dale

                    • Tom Cotten preserved/rebuilt my DLX 38, it carburates perfectly, i could not be happier. TOM IS FIRST RATE.

                      • Thank you, Steve! Tom Cotten would be my first choice, also. I've never heard anything but great stuff about his work. Unfortunately, I realize he only accepts work from established accounts. Sadly, I'm not established. Thanks for the reply!

                        • Dale, i just referred a fellow here in town restoring a 29JDwho contacted Tom who took on new work from this fellow Tom did not know. i can't speak for Tom, but i think he has been "burned" in the past from non-payment or what ever the case was. i certainly don't have any personal relationship with Tom, but when he sent me his bill, i paid for it. i know Tom does not do phone calls due to, i believe, hearing issues, but i believe if you contacted Tom and would pay him as for how he wants to be paid, you would "establish" yourself as a customer. probably paying an amount in advance for Tom's services to be rendered would be how to become an "established customer." just a suggestion, but imho, certainly worth a try.

did you buy that that magneto that was on ebay ?

                          • Thanks, Steve! I did not win that magneto. But I came in second!! I had to decide what I was comfortable bidding on an unproven mag that in the end would not be correct anyway. Not necessarily looking for correctness now, just would like to get it going, but would be willing to pay more for the right thing. At the same time a 42 degree Bosch ZEV was offered. Went for a lot more. Still looking. Dale

                            • Ok! So I was wondering how long it would take. Photobucket has "invited" me to update my account. I have all of my pictures in a file. Should also be in order. My question would be: Can I go back to each of these posts and "edit" them by inserting the image? It would probably show a link instead of the photo, correct? Even so, I think it would be better than not having the pics at all. I always like being able to see the pictures without having to log on each time but, so be it.
                              Thanks!
