Im in the last stages of assembling my 47 . Short story, the bike fell over onto the tank .(landed hard on a bike jack) . So the tank has oil in it as ive been running and riding the bike with fuel in the other side . I look into filler hole and see that there is a small coating of oil in the fuel tank . Not a lot . but , Im wondering what to do next , I think what Im going to do is

What im going to do is ,use fuel out of the left tank and leave it alone till I see measurable oil in fuel side. Any comments for a fix , ? -
Sounds like you need to repair or replace right tank.If your getting oil in the left tank the right petcock must leak but I think gas would show in rt tank.If you are talking about oil leaking past divider into the right tank thats not uncommon.I run only the left side with fuel on my 47 just out of caution if the divider on right tank should start to leak
To repair properly,if you can find someone ,would require taking apart,dent repair, stripping,tinning? and resoldering or brazing with hole locating jig ,and testing.
SOme just cut a hole on the back and attempt to resolder,
You could look for a good used tank.50-53 are brazed and would be my choice although not original with more rear taper and modification required for 47 dash.
Or try Kiwis new welded tanks.Not sure if sold separately.
You could try sealer in the gas tank but I would not.
Interesting that in 1934 chiefs had 2panels to separate the gas and oil with an air gap in between so no possibility of gas getting in oil.They must have saved about 2 bucks with the new inferior design.

Old soldered tanks?
Or
Welded Repo tanks?
Consider:
Drain oil out of your Oil Tank.
Fill Reserve Gas Tank with Gas.
Mark level on a stick.
Let sit 1-2 days.
Oil tank SHOULD be dry
IF NOT
You may leak between oil and gas chambers.Comment

I belive that they are soldered . Im going to start looking for a replacement . When I get one , fix the old one , and swap out . One thing for sure, I will just use the right tank for oil..
Might be a good winter to learn tank repair .
