  • Thor Cap Condenser Conversion

This may have been done before on the forum but here is a valuable upgrade to your points/condenser if you decide to keep them and not go to a Hall effect sensor (electronic ignition). The quality of condensers today is poor at best. In the past 30 years I have had 2 fail in my 47 Chief (both on the way to the Yankee meet in Hebron) and 1 in my 74 BMW. Luckily, the Indian sputtered on to the meet but by the time I got home had ruined the points. The BMW just plain died and had to be trucked home and it was 90 degrees out. Fun day.

After researching for a better quality capacitor/condenser I found a company called Thor Cap who sells a high quality condensor for most point controlled ignitions. Turns out most motorcycles are about .22uf or .22 microfarads so this product not only works on Indians and Harley's but also Hondas, Kawasakis, BSAs, Triumphs & old lawn mowers. Just about any motor with points & condenser.

Trouble is, they look a little odd but they are small in comparison to a metal condenser. The BMW condenser hides nicely behind a cover so there is no issue there. However, the Indian is a different story. I wanted it to look stock so I gutted the old condenser and installed the Thor Cap inside to hide it. I then filled the can with JB Weld (NOT Kwik Weld because of heat) and it looks pretty good. It will probably last for the rest of my life.

DEEBS; Yes I have been running Thor-Cap for a couple of seasons now. Very Pleased with it. Only difference from what you did is I imbedded mine in capacitor shell using black silicone as thought it might insulate better. Reminds me I need to order another one (always good to have a spare).

Interesting... first time I've heard about Thorcap. I am assuming the hole you drilled and soldered is for the "ground" end of the wire, right? NICE JOB and photos!! I'll have to look into this for my '46 Chief and/or my 2 '65 Hondas.

So, is it this one for the 1946 Indian Chief?: 225nF is used in 99% of all ignition systems on motorcycles, cars, mopeds, lawnmowers, boat engines etc.

Yes, 225 Nanofarads or .225 Microfarads (forgot that decimal point). And yes, the hole is to ground one side.

Do I really need to put it in an old can as stated? Mine would inside the cover

No, if you can hide it that would be easier. My Chief has the condenser right out in the open where you can see it but on the BMW I hid it inside the front engine cover..

Agree DEEBS! Very Nice work! ThorCap all the way since 2019 and thousands of miles.

My 64 FLH still has original condensers so I haven't converted it yet as originals may last forever.

Hi Jason. it was your post that started me on this project in the first place. Many thanks.
