37 Chief backfiring through exhaust

I have a 37 Indian chief battery model with high-performance cylinders (CCE - BY) and it all the sudden started backfiring out of the exhaust what should I look into? Typically doesn’t that suggest the timing is off?

My first suspicion, Joseph,..

Would be that the exhaust system has leaks, as seasonally cold, dense air will cause "reports" when sucked in, expanding rapidly against the hot metal.

There are other possibilities, of course!

Exhaust seems okay, but I noticed the battery is almost dead 4.3 Volts, which is odd as it’s less then a year old.

Does it only occur on deceleration, or is it more frequent?

Is compression ok?

It happens even when cruising and I have not checked the compression.

I think i would start with the ignition condenser. When you solve the problem, don't forget to let us know.

Low battery voltage could sure enough cause it to back fire.

It was the battery, I took the 6volt out of my Knucklehead and put it in the Chief and it ran smooth as could be.
I can’t believe it was the battery, so I spent the rest of the day driving around hunting for a replacement battery with no luck, so I had my son order one off Amazon and it will be here tomorrow.
