Is it possible that a 12V system will give a hotter spark? If so, that might make for easier starting and smoother low speed running.

I suspect the problem was the sealed battery. I have replaced it with an acid based and all appears well. I want to say that with my fingers crossed as the weather is not hospitable to riding right now and can't get any miles on the bike to check. But all of your suggestions have been very helpful!
