  • 48 Foot Board Extensions - Whats Correct?

Did some research to see what was the correct factory foot board extension on the 48. Everything pointed to the raised aluminum ones being correct. My bike had flat cast steel extensions. Just received Hatfields New Restoration book and it says 48s came with the flat steel ones which contradicts my previous finding. Can someone confirm which style is correct?

    Thanks!

My unrestored other than paint 48 has steel extentions. Right? Wrong? Can't answer that.

      Thanks D.A.
I'm worried I may have too hastily traded my flat steel ones for raised aluminum ones. I need the raised ones on the the bike for my wife but would have kept the flat ones had I known for certain they were originals.

The Aluminum ones might be right and all, but wait til you've ridden awhile with them, and you go to put your foot down at a traffic light, and the lip on the rear of the footboard extension catches the cuff of your pants.

The first time I almost fell over, and tossed the extensions in the corner.

Not the best design anyone ever had.

I was looking at my set of 1948 Chief pictures that I bought from Mike Breeding. This bike is claimed to be all original and it has the flat steel extensions.

This Chief was at a club road run this past summer. It's a second owner bike. The fellow that owned it has changed very little over the years.

Thanks for the followups. I'd say that confirms flats are correct for 48. Cory, if you have any other pics of that 48 I'd be interested in seeing them please.

I'm curious about how the peg style passenger footrests work, I think they're HD, and they mount on the rear footboard bracket and they curve up and to the rear and a foot peg is mounted on them for the passenger. I've got some but haven't mounted them yet. Are they a hazard, too?

The plot thickens. A guy I met in Jefferson emailed me and indicated documentation exists in the 1948 accessory catalog that shows the aluminum extension for the first time so 1948 was the first year for them. I'd guess it wasn't uncommon some 48s got the flats as inventory was being depleted no doubt resulting in a little confusion 60 years later.

Uh-oh..... are you saying what I think you are Harry? Are you thinking about putting Milwaukee parts on your Springfield iron???? I've ridden H-D's with the buddy pegs and didn't have any hazardous close calls...

Sorry Jason, this is the only other photos I took. (Note to self: "When you stumble across a "correct" machine, take a bunch of shots for those who may want to see them!!!!") For the eagle eyes out there... yes there have been a few changes but the dude assured me that he put all the "old" parts on the shelf!!! It's his rider and he did things like mount an oil filter...etc... It's hard to tell from the photos but the fenders are original paint.

Um...errr...I mean on a bike that I heard about...somewhere else!

But Cory, how can I help it if somebody in the 40's or 50's got his time zones mixed up when it came time to outfit his Indian so he could carry his sweetie along? These pegs, and the seat were as crusty as the rest of the bike that they were mounted on...I'll tell my "friend" to be careful where he takes his Indian...no judging meets for him and his corrupted Chief!!

Harry... in all fairness, you can't be expected to take the brunt of what was done 50 or 60 years ago... especially with conflicting time zone issues!!!

Throw those pegs on your....errr.... your friends Chief and I hope your...err.... his sweetie likes the foot position!
