    John, don't know the ironhead at all, but it sounds like a bad seal between crankcase and primary.

      Older Sportsters , 76 and back, had a transfer valve located in the left crankcase wall behind the primary chain. Perhaps this valve has failed.

        The transfer valve VPH-D mentioned is the usual problem. I've tried flushing them out but never had any luck getting them to seal. They are a bear to get out so if it's not the main seal leaking I just epoxy over the valve.
