  • advance weights and timer cam

Can some one tell me the correct way for the small timing cam to go into the advance weight mechanism? It will go in correct and also 180 degrees different. How do I know which is correct?

Isn't there a difference in the depth of the slots on the cam?

      Dustydog!

You can't know until you bring up the timing mark on the front cylinder's compression stroke.
Then it goes in (or the whole timer into the cases) with the small lobe pointing toward the cam follower.

      On my '65s, anyway..

That is just exactly what I did. Thanks Cotton, I am grateful for the answers. VPH-d, no the cam can go in either way. One side has a flat on it but I don't know why. But like Cotton says , front cylinder on compression has to line up with the narrow lobe.

On timers with a flat on one side of the cam there is a small roll pin in the base to locate it.

Does the roll pin keep the cam from being installed backwards?

              Yes, that is the intention.

I think that's a 'cone' motor thing, Dustydog,...
This '66 or so timer has none, and the sides of the cam are symmetrical.
