  • Panhead Valve Oiler

Gentlemen, I've done shovelheads and flatheads but please bear with me as this is my first panhead. I'm very meticulous about keeping parts in order and when I disassembled the heads, oiler parts #18100-49 and #18102-49 were at the exhaust valve. Did some one assemble it wrong in the past? Or is my parts manual wrong as it states intake valve oilers? Thanks for your help & time, Lloyd

The last time I had the valve covers off my '59, one of the oilers was broken; the little 'dripper' portion of it was found loose, had bounced around a bit and was just laying in there.

According to Palmer's book, the use of the oilers is required with certain types of rocker bearings or over oiling will result.

What Panhead has a rocker arm bearing?

i think they are possibly talking about the little rotator cup that went on the end of the valve stem on 1 or 2 years??

17611-48, 17614-49 & 17615-49 rocker arm bearings , as listed in the parts book. From my dictionary, bearing  [bair-ing]; In Machinery. the support and guide for a rotating, oscillating, or sliding shaft, pivot, or wheel. Not all bearings are ball or roller bearings.

As with a lot of mechanical items the common name is not what is listed in the book. Your reference to rocker blocks as bearings assures us of that. While politically correct the term bearing is confusing to old farts.

Don't feel bad Chris, the other year when H-D switched to "parent material bearings" for their outboard cam supports. We had to see a motor torn down to figure out they meant they eliminated the bronze bushings and were now running the cams in holes bored in the aluminum plate.

Can anyone tell me what is the Shop Dope # for this bulletin or have a pdf copy they can send or post? I read through my repop Antique Cycle Supply (Vol. III & IV) and H-D Shop Dope book (99410-93) and could find anything about the intake oilers. Thanks
