The 15" crescent opens up far enough to fit on the axle nut, the length of the handle has nothing to do with it. I've been loosening and tightening HD axle nuts for 35 years, I kinda don't need a lesson. I've never used a torque wrench on much of anything except the new bikes. I don't build motors. I'm sure you know what I mean when I say I can feel when tight is tight enough. Or is there something wrong with that, too?

Not a thing wrong with it if you are comfortable with it! And are you always so defensive?

I'd like to see what that nut looks like after 15 years of being abused by a crescent wrench. Go to Sears and buy a socket.

So, are we all friends again? If we are, have an extra beer for me.

I'm hoping we never stopped being friends! (notice skilfull use of emoticon)
Friends will say what's on their minds to each other, there may be some barking and snapping, things get resolved, and they move on-- hopefully with a better understanding of each other.
Next time I drink, I'll have an extra for ya. Won't be today, however. Can't really say when it will be again.....!

Trust me, I know enogh people who shouldn't touch any thing without a torque wrench. They always seem to put about a hundred pounds on a spark plug and never enough on anything else.

I'm with Chris on this. Use a socket or a box end wrench whenever possible. Crescent wrenches are for when you're on the road. Having said that, I am guilty of occasionally...and I repeat occasionally...using a crescent when I am trying to rush things and I have one handy.

I wanted to put a smiley in....but I couldn't figure out how to.

I haven't figured out how to do the smiley thing either since the forum changed formats a while back. They seem to only get place into the title instead of at the end of a sentence. Can some one educate me on how it's done? How about it Rooster, how'd you get those smiley faces into your post?

                      Can I vote ?

Are we taking a poll here? I use an Adjustable wrench all the time on the axle nuts front and rear and have for 30+ yrs without any problems. Yes I have torque wrenches and ratchets as well as just about every kindof socket a man would want in his barn. For some reason I use the handy adjustable and it fits quite well on those large harden nuts. I feel as those it fits better then a socket or box end wrench. I know I'm another back yard mechanic that knows no better. except my bikes use to win best running unrestored under the old judging system consistantly...hmmm Choose the tool you want just know what you're doing with it. Gentlemen,
Thanks for the replies, comments and laughter - no offense taken here on this side of the computer. I'll use my 24" crescent wrench and pull w/ my teeth that way I'm sure the wheel won't roll out from under the fender!
                            ride safe, William
