  • Panhead Frame Ground Bolt and Washer?

    Hello
I am looking for the part numbers (or sizes) of the bolt and washer that secure the battery negative cable to the frame (ground)
    Cannot find it.
    Thanks

It is a machine screw, not a bolt. If I recall it is a pan head 8-32x1/2 with a matching nut and a star washer between the wire and the frame tab. Look in the knowledge base for a fastener listing.

My 2 Panheads have a 1/4-24 round head screw with a lock washer that fastens to the tab on the right side of the frame.

None of my publications mention the ground to frame hardware either. For what it's worth, both my '48 and '60 panheads factory frame ground tabs appear to accept no larger than a No.10 screw or bolt. The '48 has a No.10-32 pan head type screw 3/8" long with a square nut and no washer. Probably should have a hex nut and star washer as Robbie stated.
My replica harness soon to be installed on the '60 has a terminal end on the ground to frame wire that is larger than No.8 and no larger than No.10. My parts book calls for No.10-24 battery terminal screws, so I will be using that size on both ends of the ground wire. and probably with an external star washer and hex nut. Unless of course more info is found.

I looked at my '48 & '51 FLs and the ground screws on the frames are 10-32. I could very well have drilled them out to accommodate #10 screws but I would be surprised if they were originally made for a 1/4" fastener. At the battery terminals, special 10-24 fasteners are used so I would think H-D would stay with the #10 size as James said above. I love these weird minutia inquiries

My bad, they should be 10-32.
