  • Panhead Wiring - Additional Guides / Material

    Good day everyone,

In addition to Palmer's books, has anyone used any other book when wiring an FLH (possibly with more pictures etc)?

More especially 61-64 with dual ignition points / coils and police equipment (eg speedo handlocks)

    Or any information online?

Have a book by Vtwin but its for Knuckleheads (it contains a lot of pictures as restoration guides).

Have done some google search and came back with a few books but cannot know their contents:

Harley Davidson Panhead Restoration by Rick Schunk

    or

How to rebuild and restore Classic H-D big Twins 1936-1964 - Same author Rick Schunk

    THANKS for all the input

The 2nd Schunk book you mentioned doesnt go into any great detail on wiring. The Clymer manual has a wiring diagram and list of terminal points which appears identical to what I can see in my 59-69 AMF service manual. I have the flipped through my master service manual from 1962 and aside from the same wiring diagram found in the other books there are a couple bulletins on the flasher wiring and generator fuse but that is all I have.

I have quite a few pictures (courtesy of Steve Barber) of the routing of the wiring on a stock '64. The coils have been removed and I don't believe it's a police model. Would they help? I've attached one sample photo, I have about 15. I could also email them directly to you. Let me know.

                    Dear All,

Should the horn operate with the horn switch pressed and the ignition switch to the off position?

My Knucklehead needs the switch to be turned away from the off position for the horn to operate.

For the 64FLH’s with trumpet horn, the horn operates with ignition off and by pressing the horn. Is it normal?

                    Thanks a lot

No, the horn should not honk in the off position.

Something not clear in Palmer’s book
                          Generator to regulator harness:
Does the vinylite end go to the generator or the other way round?
                          Please see picture

Also in Pamer’s there is no information on routing the circuit breaker to the coils.
There is a two wire loom leaving the circuit breaker and going to the coils (twin cause its a 64).
                            Any guidance please?
                            thanks a lot

With the dual point ignition each lead from the timer goes to one coil. The same coil must have the spark plug lead to the correct sparkplug. one set of points fires front plug, other fires the rear. In the manuual it tells you which point set is which, the leads and plug wires follow that. It is all quite simple, don't make it complicated.
