1948 Panhead FL – gearbox mounting bolt question

Hi – see images enclosed.

The two bolts that hold the gearbox plate to the frame maybe the incorrect thread/length and maybe upside down???

From the parts list diagram, these would appear to be part number 4320 – 3/8” x 24 x 1 1/8”, but the bolt has to go through the plate and the frame meaning it has to be considerably longer than 1 1/8”??

Can anyone give me the correct part number, and/or the correct length/diameter/thread of the bolts/nuts/washers, and indicate which way up they should be?

Those are supposed to thread into the frame.
It appears someone has installed a stud and nutted the top side?

The fastener number should be #4340
Description: 3/8 - 24 x 1 1/8"
Also required would be a lock washer with the fastener

Colony is a very good source for H-D fasteners, and their catalog is very educational. A common rule of thumb for Harley-Davidson fasteners is; 'one thread showing above the lock washer, and nut in an assembly. I don't know what H-D engineers dictated, but Harley-Davidson was a very good engineering based company, and you can count on their parts, and quality. Also, H-D parts books give dimensions for bolt size, t.p.i., and length based on part #.

This parts book shows all of the assemblies in exploded views with reference to part numbers, and an index of fastener dimensions. As Gene Harper used to say, you can learn everything you need to know by studying a parts book. This ebay book shows before and after 1948 which is most valuable.
