  • 48 Panhead - a few more questions post judging

ignition switch top.jpgHi – I’m limited by the five photos, so here a few more easy questions

5 - see nuts photo - which way should the nuts be put on?
6 - se Jiffy stand photo - which side of the frame should the nuts be on? inside or outside? judges say outside, parts book shows inside
7- see ignition switch photos - cover should not have a lip at the end? It should appear as in the 'white' photo, not as on the bike? Correct?

    Thanks, Greg

        Hi Greg,
The ignition switch in the picture is aftermarket, as is the separate cover, neither look like the original part.
The flat washer face side of factory nuts go against whatever you are bolting together.

I haven’t got a close-up of the required area on a 48 Pan but I have factory photos of some Big Twins from other years. First is a 1941 prototype Flathead.

Next is a 1947 prototype Knucklehead with 1946 engine.

Third is a 1954 prototype Panhead with 1952 engine.

Fourth is a 1955 prototype Panhead.

I recently looked at a low mileage OP early '47 Knuck....one of the first 400 1947's built.
The bottom 2 bolts for the kickstand were early style, plain faced coarse thread with large hex, nuts on backside.
The top 2 bolts were CP fine thread,as shown in 1948 parts book...nuts on backside.

Notice all visible bolt heads are CP on this 1948.

Strange Bird was at the Florida meet and I noticed he has the switch covers availabe in chrome or brass you can have chromed yourself. They have the correct downturned tip.
