65s did not originally have a starter relay, however, many had a retro-fit relay kit installed. I don't think the relay pictured is part of the kit.

I believe it is a turn-signal flasher, Shin!

I found one hidden in the headlamp nacelle.

VPH-D thanks! so,,, there is no starter reiay on 65.... what year the relay installed first? I saw it underneath of battery case on 69..
what is the reason to put the starter relay on? to give more electric to solenoid?

Cotten, thanks! I just checked the terminals .... it should be starter relay. please see attached pics,

The starter relay was added in 1967 to eliminate all the amps going through those tiny wires and the starter button on the handlebar. Early FLH electric start had issues with melting the starter button and wires when cranking the starter for extended period of time.

If that is a starter relay, it's not the one used by H-D starting in '67. At least not for big twins. Also, when the relay first showed up, it could be retrofitted to '65 and '66, as the MoCo offered a kit with a bracket that was attached to the underside of the battery box. Not sure exactly when, but you did not need the kit from '68 up as the battery box was, by then, made with a bracket as part of the whole weldment/stamping. If you bought the retrofit kit, you would have to drill 2 holes in the bracket in the "floor" of the battery box to attach the bracket and the relay.

Herz a pic of an original one mounted on my 65 FLH (bracket is homemade).

                  The service bulletin

                  One more thing to consider

As stated neither was offered for 1965 models, both were available as add-on components. I have added both.

So what would an OEM flasher relay look like, folks?
