Period correct Black tool box with wingnut for 1957 Panhead

looking for a OEM or period correct black tool box with wing nut type lock for my 1957 Panhead,
any ideas been looking for awhile.

Not sure where you are looking but there have been a couple of them go by on Ebay in the last year. Put it out on Facebook, as many Forums as you can and cross your fingers. Several of the winged screws have sold as well.

The Wing Screw is available from V-Twin. It is the same type screw used on K Model battery box. The toolbox was used thru 1964

The '55-'57 cover is ribbed, the '58-'64 is smooth. Different toolbox. The winged screw was dropped for the plain slotted screw in '58.

My 57, ribbed with screw, my 58 smooth with screw. Not to say it is correct but has been this way for many years. You have a pic of plain vs winged screw??

I think some or all 58s had the wing nut, until it was changed to the screw.

Sorry, I meant wing nuts on both tool boxes. The only wing nut here is me.

It is not a wing nut. It is a wing screw.

Many of the later straight slot screw were converted to wing type by brazing a chain link sideplate on them to form "wings". There is a "C" clip on the screw inside the cover to retain it, often lost and allows the screw to fall off.

Ended up buying the orginial one off eBay might of paid to much but that’s part of the game, would you guys recommend leaving as is or repairing the two holes and repaint going on a 57 everyday rider about 90% orginial with some nos parts,

Do what you want as it is yours. Personally I think I would repair it and acquire the wing screw and the retainer. If your going this far might as well have it correct. Just my 2 cents.

I'd repair it. Simple job and would make it much nicer looking. And OEM winged screws show up regularly. Repops too. They are also same as early Sportster and K-Model.

Remember that 55-57 Toolbox Backs all have THREE Mount Holes.
The 58 and later back only has TWO mount holes.
I have seen a few 2 hole backs that people added the earlier ribbed wingnut type cover to
and passed them off as correct for 57-57 which they are not.
The 3 year only 55-57 Toolboxes are usually harder to find than the earlier box with the lock.
That toolbox was made a lot more years and for more than one model.
The 55-57 Pans were lower production years also. 46EL

looks like I bought a good one three hole back, just missing the wingnut
If you saw the pic was going to fill the two holes in front (must of had reflectors on it or something) not sure if I want to remove all the paint clean up and repaint or leave as is still thinking
