  • Windshield for 1965 Panhead EGlide

What is the correct Windshield top end for a 1965 Panhead EGlide?
The flat one or the peaked one?

A follow up question - when did the peaked windshields stop and the "flat tops" start? I.E. - what is the transition year? Out of the country right now and can't look at my '65 sales brochures and detail nor the accessory catalogs.

I'm guessing the round or flat top started sometime in 1966.

When the batwing fairing came out in '67 it had a flat (or round top) windshield. The regular type did too!

Kind of thought '66 for the windshield but wasn't sure without looking.

Ray, My fall 65 accessory catalog shows the peaked window. I have seen a couple of 65's with flat tops and the darker bead color like the orginals had and the owners claimed they were original. I have not personally seen a 66 with a peaked window with the dark bead.

Thanks John, I was thinking the same, that '65 accessory catalog showed the peaked style but out of the country right now so couldn't confirm. The original that was on my '65 is the flatter style with dark bead. So is the NOS replacement I have on it now. Didn't have my catalogs here (out of country) so couldn't confirm for this post. I have seen one '65 with the peaked style that was a totally untouched bike, dark bead. All the others I've seen had the flatter style, dark bead.

                    upper windsheild

Larry is correct on the 65 peaked ,66 round question but the earlier post about batwing fairings being introduced in 67 is incorrect ,1969 was the first year for the fairing and the small tour-pac.

Yup, that was me and I apologize for the wrong info. . I was thinking round top windshields, and it was actually the '67 style sidecar that had the round top shield. I knew it was something fiberglass in '67!
To exonerate myself I went out and actually researched rather than depend on memory and dug out a '66 Electra-Glide sales brochure where one of the featured changes is the "New Windshield Shape", and pictures the '66 with the round top shield.

I've been searching for a new window for my peaked 64 shield, the original is hard to look thru. Are there any good replacements available? Is it possible to re-use the original beading?

I thought 68 was the first year for the flat top.

National Cycle still sells the peaked style. The bead is clear. The older ones I have seen with the dark bead are just aged plastic. There is a man onebay selling the peaked upper for $100, saying they are rare. National still has them listed for $90. Go figure? Mike

Panacea - I think you can re-use the beading. I noticed on my windshield that the beading is kind of loose, not rattling or anything like that but pretty sure if I wanted to I could remove it. Treat it "gingerly" if you try but I definitely think it can be removed. I have an old windshield in the loft which would be the candidate if I were to experiment with removal

Portagepen - good note on the "yellowed beading" being due to age. The NOS flat top version I have is not yellowed.
