    Johnny,

You mentioned you have Palmers book. It has the information you need to perform this service other than photos showing the tools required for proper installation.

Here are some photos of a recent service of a 1939 EL I did for a friend. IMG_20250519_181947814.jpg

Thanks for the pictures, i have a tool for the clutch hub nut and the spring tension nut, but your tool looking better where did you get it
also is the vent tube suppose to turn down like the picture,
i used the original springs, but the ones i ordered are much longer
so should i set the spring tension at 3/8" for the original springs or use the longer springs
thank you for the pictures it very help full

        John,

Some of my tooling is after market and some I machined and made myself. Here's a few photos I took for you.

Harley Davidson had a service bulletin regarding pressure plate spring .

I typically set the preload @ or around 0.410". I base my setting off the stack height, math and pressure measured on each spring in my spring tester.
In the photo above, you see the dimensional difference visually with the one on the far right.

The chain oil director on the end of the crankcase breather should be positioned at the 6 O'clock position. There are reasons for this positioning.

        I hope this helps,
