  • Springer Horn

I adjust my horn to where it sounds great but when the bike is started it weakens up a bit. Has anyone rubber mounted the horn with success but not detracting from originality? If so let me know what you did. Thanks in advance.

Just wondering.. you didn't say what year springer horn.. there are different mounting set ups depending on year. Guessing you are talking late mount since early has rubber. I am assuming you have the correct hardware? the top mount takes special bolts with a shoulder that go through a spring plate. The shoulders bottom out before the spring plate is crushed. this gives it some play and also helps from keeping the horn bracket from breaking itself. Here is a picture of the special bolt with spring plate. You can see in the hole of the spring plate how much play the shoulder bolt actually gives you. Different years used different shoulder bolts. Don't know if this helps or not. Might help someone.

The bike is a 41 ULH and has the rubber terminal strip sandwiched between the horn and the top mount with #10 round head screws. The bottom is solidly mounted to the fender, is something incorrect with this?

Mac, I measured the 45 knuckle and the 41 flatly. Instead of measuring CL to the hole I measured to the face of the horn mount looking forward because I couldn’t get an accurate consistent measurement down the exact center of the fender. Both were at 18-3/16”.

Lots of parts mount that era horn... Here are some pictures of an original with mounts attached. Bottom is actually mounted with spring steel plates to the fender mount with shims. link is kind of a parts blow up of a horn mounting kit.

To correctly adjust the horn you have to use an ammeter. See Palmer's.

Thanks for the pictures. I knew I had a 6 bolt horn, not a 9 bolt but I didn’t realize the mounting was totally different. Parts book wasn’t much help and Palmer didn’t have a picture of a 9 bolt, just a description. I will have to prioritize finding a 9 bolt and make due until.

Its not hard to turn your later horn or a hummer horn into a 9 bolt.. Drill a few holes, fill a few holes, take the plate off the back and change some hardware. You are all set.

6 & 9 screw horns mount the same way.

I thought only the 6 bolt horn has the steel bracket attached to it?
