74 Intake Manifolds

Where have all the 74 plumber style intake manifolds gone ? All of the ones that show up on Ebay are 61 manifolds. Did we chrome all of them ? All the ones that I have are for 61 inch models. The only 74's that I see are aftermarket. Is it just me ?

Knuckles were ~3.410", Craig...

Judging by what has crossed my benches over the last couple of decades, anyway.

Pans supposedly had two shorter widths, but I have a strong suspicion that the fabled Pan FL spec of 3 3/8" were actually cut down Knucks.

Since I have never encountered a '48-'49 steel manifold wider than 3 1/4", even upon FL machines, it makes me wonder if the 3 3/8" cast manifolds were ever actually produced.

I have successfully outfitted several 61" Pan manifolds for Pan FL motors (note however, I do not use brass dimensions for PEEK!)

PS: Why is there only one Pan manifold in the Parts Book?

According to the parts book 1 manifold for both 61 and 74 knuckle. I own and have owned bushel baskets full of late knuckle intakes and do not believe I have ever seen or owned a wide one.

I have seen, and still own, one of the long manifolds.

After rereading the manifold info in Palmer's latest book, I see that he say's that the second version of the large port intake manifold # 1108-41, the pipe was machined to the correct size on the production line to fit each model. Also, the parts order pipe was the wide version and had to be trimmed to fit by the buyer. Thanks to Cotten for the info on using the short width pipe on the 74 model.

I didn't tell how to do it.

(It became obvious when failed mass-produced PEEK seals crossed my benches.)

PS: You have a wide silver-soldered steel manifold, Mark? If its cast, how will we know if it isn't a trimmed Knuck?

PPS: If as per Palmer, "..the parts order pipe was the wide version and had to be trimmed to fit by the buyer..., Why in the hell were there not all kinds of barnyarded and skewed widths, hand-filed or hacksawed, in the 'fossil record'? How was the 'buyer' to know how to fit it?

Modern COLONY productions were 3 9/16" I think.

Thanks for the pics Chris. I never looked into the production numbers, but it seems that a lot of 61's were produced and a lot of their manifolds survived as opposed to the 74's.

Your manifold in your pic #3 is what I call a silver-soldered steel manifold, for '48-'49.
