1927 J Model manual

I purchased a J model last year. looked good but turned out to be a disaster, worse than owning a boat !
A typical issue is when I took the forks apart only one tube had the guide.
cracked valves, cracked cylinder, bad gear box etc.
STILL I am determined to build it correctly, may not be cosmetically correct but the engine and box I intend to get perfect.
JD Jugs for a start ! the wait was worth it as they are top quality and well recommended.
My question is where can I find a manual, I have the shop dope but really need to know what should be there.
An example would be the fork guide if both had been missing I would not have known any difference, and possibly assembled the bike without them.
Anybody help ?
looked for something suitable in the library but to no avail.

Chris, i imagine you've seen my restoration thread 27JD. And John Brooke's 20J thread.

JD Yahoo Groups has various manual downloads under "Files." imho, jd yaho groups is a "must join." There's guys there that rarely or never come to amca or caimag.

scrEamBay has literature time to time.

I couldn't have made it without 22-26, 22-27 and 22-31 parts books. I studied them for hours, contrasting, comparing information i was reading, asking questions, making notes, etc.

1918 "motorcycle repairman's manual" and 1923 "u.s. army manual" also helpful.

Type in Harley Davidson "F" head engine," i found very helpful info there. Rebuilt my transmission using info therein. and sage words on pinion/setup clearance.

And, Rider's Handbook very good.

I couldn't be at my current stage of progress without getting to know fellows from jd yahoo and amca forums, receiving the help of some really very experienced, knowledgeable and passionate JD enthusiasts.

I did as much if my own work as i could, but certain things i don't have equipment for, so the help i received was invaluable.

Research, study and ask questions.

If you can't find the info you need to purchase or download, i can make copies.

The 2 manuals that Steve mentions I have on a shared dropbox folder. PM me your email address and I will make them available to you.

I got my parts book from a USA ebay seller, I would think that the 27 book should be available on ebay or one of the J/JD suppliers such as Replicant Metals who have some advertised on their "Library" page.

Thank you, I will take your advice and follow up these leads.
Watched your u tube clip and was amazed that you also ride holding the handlebars just off the grips, funny I tend to do that also !
I appreciate that restoring one of these in the States is hard but here in the UK it is near impossible, I went to the UK's largest swap meet and despite searching all day the only thing I found was a rack that was beyond repair.
Am currently looking to fit a hand clutch lever as we have a lot of hills and need my right foot on the brake to stop me rolling backwards so very difficult operating the clutch, I have found a lever but no linkeage, any diagrams would be appreciated. chris@cssurvey.co.uk

Valuable information from members

I would like to thank the members who have contacted me

Firstly my problem was starting on a hill with no front brake and my right foot on the brake.
My initial thought was a hand clutch lever, but have been advised that they are not recommended.
And then out of the blue I find out the European model has an inner and outer rear brake !!
The one I purchased only had the outer, problem solved !
now all I have to do is find the correct parts.

So thanks guys, makes it worth being a member.
